Foundation funding for most major program areas rebounded in 2004, following a two-year decline in giving. Among the close to 1,200 larger private and community foundations included in the Foundation Center's annual grants sample, grant dollars rose 8.1 percent between 2003 and 2004 to $15.5 billion. The number of grants awarded increased a more modest 4.8 percent, from 120,721 to 126,497.
