Funding by larger private and community foundations continued to grow in 2005, albeit at a more moderate pace than in the prior year. Among the close to 1,200 largest U.S. foundations included in the Foundation Center's annual grants sample, grant dollars rose 6.1 percent between 2004 and 2005, from $15.5 billion to $16.4 billion. The number of grants awarded increased at a more modest 3.5 percent, from 126,497 to 130,961.
